Tom Holland found out he had been cast as the new Spider-Man by reading it online – and promptly broke his computer.
The star made his Spidey debut in 2016 flick Civil War, and has become a firm favourite with Marvel fans ever since. Spilling the beans on how he joined MCU, the 24-year-old explained that he had been through several auditions, but hadn’t heard back from bosses so assumed he had missed out.
Chatting to Daniel Kaluuya for Variety’s Actors on Actors series, he said he found out about the role in the press. ‘I got my computer, and my dog was sitting next to me. I type in Marvel,’ Tom began. ‘I’ve still got the article saved on my computer. It said, “We would like to introduce our new Spider-Man, Tom Holland”. Tom broke his computer after being cast in the film (Picture: Marvel) ‘I broke my computer, because I flipped it up in the air. It fell off my bed. my dog went nuts.’ It sounds like Tom’s dog wasn’t the only one… However, the Devil All The Time actor had trouble convincing his family of the news, with his brother suggesting it could have been a ‘hack’ – as no one had officially been in touch.
‘Then the studio called me and gave me the news. It was so bizarre how it happened,’ he added. And the rest was history. Tom is currently busy filming for the third stand-alone Spider-Man film, which is set to be released next December. He has also been linked to a part in the upcoming Willy Wonka prequel, slated for a 2023 drop. The movie is set to see Roald Dahl’s eccentric character take to the big screen once again, for an origin story.
