Simon Cowell is out of the hospital, barely a week after breaking his back while testing out a new electric bicycle.
The British music mogul, 60, returned home Saturday, his representative, Ann-Marie Thomson, confirmed Sunday to USA TODAY.
Cowell broke his back in several places while trying out his SWIND EB-01 bike with family in the courtyard of his home in Malibu, California, where he’s been quarantined during the COVID-19 pandemic with his girlfriend, Lauren Silverman, and their son, Eric, 6. The “America’s Got Talent” creator was taken to the hospital, where he underwent six hours of surgery that included placing a metal rod in his back.
The manufacturer of his e-bike describes it as "the most technically advanced and powerful electric bicycle on the market" with a 15kW electric power motor. Electric bikes vary greatly in speed, with some going as fast as 60 mph.
The acerbic judge, previously a judge on “American Idol” and “The X Factor,” missed last week’s first live episodes of NBC’s “AGT,” which recruited Kelly Clarkson, the original "Idol" winner, to fill in. “Simon, don’t hurry back, I’m getting real comfortable in your chair,” Clarkson joked in a clip on Twitter. “I look pretty good in it.”
His fellow “AGT” judges Heidi Klum and Sofia Vergara shared photos on Instagram as they socially distanced on the set, pointing to Cowell’s empty seat.
"We miss our boss!! Come back fast simoncowell!!" Vergara wrote, while Klum tweeted, “Wishing you a speedy recovery.”
A day after his ordeal, Cowell was tweeting out his thanks to the medical team treating him and offering advice: “If you buy an electric trail bike, read the manual before you ride it for the first time.”
