Couples who live together are coping with being underfoot, those who live apart are struggling with separation anxiety while parents are juggling homeschooling with tantrums.
Overall it’s hardly the best setting to keep the romance going. Added to that is the fact that most of us are working from home and our usual grooming habits have gone out the windows so come clocking off time, the last thing we feel like is an intimate night with our other half.
That being so EVOKE’s resident sex expert, and host of Glow West podcast, Dr. Caroline West has stepped in to explain why it’s vital to keep the romance going during these uncertain times.
She points out that as it’s such a stressful time, it’s ‘important to turn off the screens and spend some happy time with your partner to recharge your mental batteries.’
For couples who are stuck at home together who want to enjoy a romantic date night, Caroline recommends trying to get the kids off to bed early and switching the screens off.
‘It’s very easy to get caught up in scrolling, but real-time quality time is more of a boost to your relationship. Don’t talk about work, and while you might not have the energy for sex, some snuggles on the couch can still be endorphin boosters. ‘
A great option for an intimate night in she suggests is to ‘take a candlelit bath with a glass or two of wine.’
She also encourages couples to ‘spend some time learning about body-safe sex toys and lubricant and have some fun browsing sites such as jodivine.com or sexsiopa.ie.
The anticipation of waiting for your parcel to arrive will keep you going during this period, and trying out your new purchase will definitely entertain you!’
For maintaining a romantic setting at home, she advises making the effort to keep your room including changing the sheets and introducing candles to set the mood with soft lighting and nice smells.
For those couples then who can’t currently see one another she advises making use of Zoom or Facetime for ‘a bit of long-distance chatting or sexting, or just plain old hanging out together.’
‘Maintaining a loving connection with your partner by just speaking to them is a way to relieve tension. Couples are using Zoom to play board games, watch tv together, or share memes with each other, all of which keep your connection going.
Another great budget option if money is tight according to Dr. West is to indulge your partner with a game of strip poker or to do some online sex quizzes to figure out what you both like.
